One of the happiest moments in parenthood is to watch as your child’s imagination is put to use. It’s truly a wonderful experience to watch as your child engages in play while they come up with creative ways to pretend play, engage in an interactive play routine with their siblings or use their artistic skills in such an imaginary way.
Some children aren’t born with a natural skill of using their imagination on a regular basis; perhaps your child simply is a more serious child in nature and needs a little nudge to get in touch with their inner creative side. If you are finding that your child is more interested in the serious side of life and you desire to have a spark of imagination become a part of their world then read on to learn how you can fuel your child’s imagination without much effort.
Have Less Toys
Often time’s children who have a lot of toys lose touch of their imagination skills for they have toys that were built to be played with in a specific way. Consider going through the toys your child has and reducing them so that they are able to play more pretend versus realistically with said toys. The fewer toys your child has the more apt they are to get creative with what they do have and in turn their imagination flourishes.
Turn off Electronics
Designate a time when you allow electronics for your child then shut it all down. While the recommendation is about two hours at most per day of electronics, it’s up to you to determine what you feel is good for your child. Having a more balanced life of both pretend play and electronics will help fuel your child’s imagination because they won’t have the option to be stuck in front of computer games, television shows or other electronics that can suck the imagination out of their world.
In addition to having fewer toys and turn off electronics time, you can get those children outside or inside on a rainy day for some unstructured play. This means that your child is allowed to simply play, enjoy childhood without it being micro-managed. Often times you will see your child’s imagination be fueled simply by letting them enjoy childhood and all they have in their environment to experience.
Read Lots of Books
Books open the doors to so many thoughts and creative views about the world and what one can do in life. There are so many genres of books that can fuel your child’s imagination simply by having reading become a part of their everyday life. Get a free town library card if you don’t have the cash to purchase a lot of books, and allow your children to select books that interest them. Consider having a half hour each day designated to reading time for your child and watch as their imagination runs wild.
There you have it a few ways you can easily start to fuel your child’s imagination. Childhood only lasts so long, it’s your duty as a parent to learn ways to encourage your child’s creative side so that they can look back upon childhood and realize just how fun it was to be a child.
