Creating A Homeschool Curriculum
There can be a lot of information out there when it comes to creating and figuring out a curriculum. Don’t stress. Instead, remember this simple tips for creating a homeschool leasson plan and curriculum that can help.
Look up Homeschool Curriculum Reviews
Of course, there are tons of homeschool curriculum out there that have everything already done for you. However, just because all the work is done for you doesn’t mean it is the best for teaching your child. Look up reviews over the summer and delve into researching the best curriculum for your family.
Determine your Child’s Learning Strategy
All kids have different learning styles and your child is no exception. Maybe your curriculum from the following year wasn’t quite what was needed, or maybe it was perfect. However, before you choose a curriculum, determine whether your child learns through kinesthetic lessons, through listening, or through teaching others.
It is far easier to put your curriculum together when you know the best strategy for teaching.
Find Out What They Want to Learn
The best thing about homeschool curriculum is you are in charge of what your kids learn. This means they can learn things they want to learn, too. Ask your child to write down a few ideas they want to learn about this school year. Incorporate these ideas into your curriculum.
Also check out the book “Home Learning Year By Year” by Rebecca Rupp. It outlines everything your kids should learn each year. It is a must have in our homeschool!
Think Ahead
Summer is the perfect opportunity to get ahead of the game. What do you need to get started? Start prepping your lesson plan book, organize materials, and order books that you need. I like to get at least two weeks’ worth of lessons planned ahead of time, so I am always working ahead of the game. The more you think ahead, the smoother the year will go.
Plan for Field Trips
Let’s face it; leaving the house or classroom for a hands-on learning experience is one of the best ways to learn. Start planning trips for your kids throughout the school year. Once you have planned your trips, you can easily plan lessons and work around them.
For example, if you want to go to take your kids to Disney World, you can easily have them write a report on the history of Walt Disney, design their own rollercoaster, or figure out the math that goes into keeping people safe on rides.
Sell your Last Year Curriculum
Did you know that you can sell your curriculum from previous years? You don’t have to stock pile it unless of course, you have a younger child who will be using it. However, summer is the perfect time to sell that old material and put it towards your new curriculum.
You can sell last year’s curriculum on eBay, Amazon, or on Homeschool Curriculum Marketplaces on FB. The great thing about Facebook groups is that you can, also buy curriculum that meets your needs.
