So you want to start your own blog? Blogging is a great tool to use when you are looking for your own little space on the web. You can blog for your own personal reasons or you can blog to create an extra income stream for your family. Income reports for this blog will be coming soon if that is something you all would be interested in.
I often get asked, “How do I start a blog?”
Hopefully, this post will help you if you have the same question. My greatest advice that I can give you in the beginning of your blogging journey is to pick a topic that you are passionate about. Think about it for a few minutes. What topic do you get most excited about? What can you sit down with your friends and talk endlessly about? What gets you ramped up? What do you like reading books about and studying?
That answer will be the golden ticket to winning at blogging. You need to have a crystal clear focus and passion to write about your topic. Once you got that sorted out, it’s time to bring your idea to life. This post may contain affiliate links, this means if you purchase through one of my links I may get a small commission. First things first, you are going to need a domain and a website host. You want a self-hosted website because you have 100% control of your own content. I also recommend using WordPress. It’s really not difficult to learn and you will feel good knowing that your website is secure.
How to set up a self-hosted Wordpress website.
There are many different hosts out there to choose from. Bluehost seems to be the most popular choice, however, after YEARS and YEARS of research and experience, I would honestly go with Siteground. Siteground has an extremely low rate of downtime making it more reliable. Did I mention they also have some pretty amazing startup rates? YES! Check it out:
Starting out I would highly recommend that you go with the StartUp package. It has 10GB Webspace and can handle up to 10k visits a month. However, if you plan on having more than one website or plan to have a picture heavy blog, then GrowBig would be a better option for you.
Once you decide on which package best fits your needs, simply hit the big orange “Get Started” button.
Now you’re going to get to choose your domain name.
When choosing your domain name try to choose keywords that will focus on your topic. This will help you later on when you’re trying to rank in Google Search. That’s for another time though. So choose something that will state what your blog is about. Cute names can work as long as you add a keyword in there.
Ex. Let’s say you want to blog about cupcakes. A cute name would be Beautiful Sprinkles, however, that won’t rank in search engines and people won’t be able to tell what you’re about just by glancing at your name. When you’re online you have just a few seconds to capture a readers attention. So instead go with something like Beautiful Cupcakes & Sprinkles. I have no idea if that is a real site, but I hope you get the idea. LOL!
You might have to play around with this a bit to find a domain that isn’t already taken. Next up is simply setting up your account. You will come across this section:
Here I just recommend just selecting “Domain Registration”. The only reason I’d recommend Domain Privacy is if you plan on blogging anonymously.
Complete the checkout process and BAM! You’re ready to go!
Set Up WordPress
Go to “My Account” tab and find the WordPress symbol like this:
Follow the tutorial on the screen on how to install your new WordPress website. And that’s it! You’re all set!
Now just go to your website and log in. It will usually be: yourdomain.com/admin OR yourdomain.com/wp-admin
Once logged in you can start choosing a theme for your blog and start writing posts. Tutorial for setting up your theme coming soon!
